In a quiet launch in Taiwan, Asus launched its new AR and VR-centric smartphone called the Zenfone Ares. The device emphasizes on AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) with specs almost identical to last year's ZenFone AR.
The smartphone sports a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with Quad HD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. It has a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. The display comes with Tru2life technology for improved outdoor visibility and it also has oil repellent coating.
The device runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset aided by up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The handset's hardware is compatible with Google's ARCore technology.
There is 23MP rear camera sensor, which has a high resolution PixelMaster 3.0 lens. The camera facilitates features such as motion tracking and depth sensing that will enable Augmented Reality experiences. On front, the device gets an 8MP camera sensor for selfies. The handset is kept alive by a 3300mAh battery, which comes with the Quick Charge 3.0 support.
It also has a fingerprint scanner that doubles as the home button. But sadly, it still runs Android Nougat. It would have made more sense if it ran Android Oreo out of the box.
The Asus Zenfone Ares is priced at TWD 9,999, which is roughly around Rs 39,800. This is significantly cheaper than the price of ZenFone AR.
