Samsung Galaxy Fold

One of the most anticipated foldable devices in the last next few months was the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Unveiled on February 21, 2019, at the Galaxy Unpacked event, the hybrid smartphone developed by Samsung Electronics will be available to the masses from April 26, 2019.

When folded there is a smaller 4.58 inch 1960 x 820 Super AMOLED screen on the front of the device and then it unfolds like a book to open up a larger, 7.3 inch 2152 x 1536 Infinity Flex AMOLED screen inside.

It runs on a 7 nanometer Qualcomm processor and 12GB of RAM with 512GB of memory. There is going to be a triple lens 16MP +12MP+12MP rear camera, and a 4,380mAh battery split up into two sections The device runs on Android 9 Pie.

Following Samsung’s footsteps Huawei is also going to unveil its folding flagship device named Huawei Mate X. It folds outwards into a rather manageable smartphone form. The device is also  5G ready. The device is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 980 processor while other specs are yet unknown. Huawei will start selling the Mate X in the middle of 2019.

Oppo foldable smartphone

Oppo has not officially launched a folding phone yet, but what it does have is a folding phone prototype that we caught a glimpse of at MWC 2019 and it looks a lot like the Huawei Mate X. We currently don't know anything about the specs and features of the device. Images of the phone were shared by Oppo vice president on Chinese Social Media website earlier.

Royale FlexPai

Royale FlexPai was the first foldable smartphone launched later last year. Manufactured by Chinese Technology company Royale. Royale FlexPai is a device that works both as an smartphone and as a Tablet.

It has a large 7.8 inch diagonal Cicadia Flex display developed by Royole, that folds in the middle to present two smaller 4 inch smartphone screens. When unfolded, the FlexPai’s screen resolution is 1,920 x 1,440 306 ppi and has a 4:3 ratio.

There is a 3,970mAh battery that lits the device, a dual 16MP and 20MP rear camera setup, a fingerprint sensor on the side. It runs on Water OS  based on Android 9 Pie and is powered by a 2.84GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.

Xiaomi Mi Flex

Xiaomi president Lin Bin posted a teaser video of Xiaomi Mi Flex prototype. The video shows a screen which has two folds on either side, so basically it’s a double folding phone with screens that fold back behind the main, middle display and a UI that instantly responds. Xiaomi says the prototype in the video isn’t the final device. The names currently being considered are thought to be the Xiaomi Dual Flex and Xiaomi Mix Flex.

LG Bendi

LG is developing foldable displays from quite a long time. Now it seems that LG has succeeded in making foldable screen for smartphones. LG has confirmed a long time ago that its been working on smartphones with foldable displays. In January LG filed a patent for its foldable display and teased a "mobile phone with a flexible display which can be folded in half”. LG is currently reluctant in revealing the final design or the final price of the device but LG has promised to roll out the device later this year.

You might be wondering whether we can expect to see Apple release a foldable iPhone / iPad hybrid anytime soon. It’s highly unlikely that we will see any such device from Apple this year. Apple has been granted patents for both foldable and bendable displays so we can expect the company to roll out the device next year. Until then we have to wait for the above mentioned smartphones make their way to the market and how the public receives it so we can predict the future of th foldable display technology in mobile phones is here to stay or will be short lived.
