Reports suggests that Samsung is looking for buyers of its foldable display technology that Samsung used in its Galaxy Fold. Samsung debuted the Galaxy Fold at its Unpacked event on 20th of february, now it has sent some foldable display panel samples to Cupertino hoping to attract Apple as a potential buyer.
Samsung Display is already a provider of OLED screens for the iPhone, and the company’s flexible OLED technology is probably the most advanced display ever made. Samsung has also send its foldable displays to Google which might use it in its upcoming foldable Pixel devices.
Samsung Display sent 7.2 inch foldable samples to Apple, Google, Oppo and Huawei, which just announced its own foldable phone, Mate X. Meanwhile, Apple has been filing and getting a lot of patents awarded related to foldable phones.
Smartphone makers are excited about the technology because they think that customers will find a foldable handset attractive as it offers a phone and tablet in one device. While we have yet to see how foldable smartphones hold up under extended daily use.
Samsung Display has a potential to produce 200,000 foldable screens every month that means Samsung Display is currently capable of producing 2.4 million units of the foldable displays per year. With this production capacity Samsung is now looking for other clients anticipating low consumer demand for the Galaxy Fold.
The Galaxy Fold is currently the cheapest foldable display device from a major Smartphone maker at $1,980 (Around Rs. 278,000 in PKR) because Huawei Mate X comes with a price tag of $2,600 (~ Rs. 360,000 in PKR). The question is whether Apple and Google will consider Samsung as their foldable display supplier for future devices or not.
