ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given the green light to a substantial electricity tariff adjustment in Karachi, amounting to Rs 4.45 per unit. This tariff revision pertains to the first quarter of the previous fiscal year.

NEPRA has now forwarded the decision to raise electricity rates in Karachi to the federal government for formal notification. The additional charges will be collected from K Electric consumers during the months of October and November 2023.

With this approved hike, K Electric customers will witness an increase from the previous rate of Rs 1.49 per unit to Rs 4.45 per unit.

Earlier, on September 8, the National Electricity Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had announced a tariff rate increase of Rs 1.46 per unit, citing the context of the July monthly fuel adjustment. NEPRA issued a corresponding notification, and this adjustment is set to be reflected in September's electricity bills. It's crucial to note that the tariff increase does not affect Lifeline and K Electric customers, as clarified in the official notification.

Before these developments, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had responded positively to a relief plan in Pakistan, amounting to Rs 15 billion, aimed at providing financial assistance to electricity consumers. Insiders familiar with the situation revealed that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) played a pivotal role in securing this relief package from the IMF.
