Apple is expected to release its next generation of iPhone in September 2019. According to a reliable source, the tech company is working with Sony to integrate 3D cameras into its next generation iPhones. With this type of technology it could transform photography, security, and gaming.
Sony has confirmed the news about it being onboard with Apple to develop 3D camera. It will be ready by 2019 with the company starting mass production from the summer next year. Sony has a half market share of the camera chip market and supplies, it clientele includes Apple and Samsung.
So we can expect more smartphones to get equipped with 3D camera technology next year. Sony showed several samples of using a custom phone with a 3D camera on its rear.
Sonys 3D sensor will use IR light to create a 3D map of the environment. The ToF sensor works by emitting infrared light, which bounces off surfaces and back to the sensor present in the phone. The sensor detects the depth of objects by measuring the differences in energy levels.
These sensors can be used in various applications and fields such as gesture recognition, object recognition and detection of obstacles.
