CES 2020 has kicked this new year in Las Vegas to symbolize that we have entered a decade of technology, innovation and amazing startups. CES is a consumer oriented conference where companies presents what they think are the next major technological breakthroughs and will bring significant changes to the life of users. We have seen a lot of stuff in the seven days including Sony’s tech-loaded concept car, Samsung’s digital avatars and OnePlus’s disappearing phone cameras. Exciting new consumer oriented products in some of the major categories showcased at the CES 2020 are:
Laptops and Tablets:
A lot of laptops and tablets were unveiled at the CES 2020. Lenovo showcased its gaming laptop called Legion Y740S which is just 0.6-inches thick and weighs a light 1.9kg. It will be powered by the 10th-gen Intel Core i9 H-series processor’s chip. Lenovo also developed an external GPU called Thunderbolt 3 GPU BoostStation, which you can plug in to your laptop to get the best graphics. Lenovo has also announced its foldable laptop which will go on sale soon. The ThinkPad X1 Fold, which we first saw last year, has a flexible LG display.
Samsung's much awaited Galaxy Chromebook has also been announced at the CES 2020, it has a 13.3-inch 4K display and a battery life that lasts an entire workday. Samsung also debuted the Samsung Galaxy Book Flex Alpha, which features a 13.3-inch QLED screen, as well as Intel's 10th-gen Comet Lake CPUs, up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage.
How can we forget HP when talking about Laptops, HP showcased the Spectre x360 15 laptop, that features a 15.6-inch 4K OLED display and thinner bezels than its predecessor. HP’s Elite Dragonfly also made an appearance, with updated 5G connectivity and an integrated Tile tracker, which allows the user to locate the laptop even when it’s powered off.
Smart TVs:
In the TV segment, Samsung stole the limelight this time by showcasing The Wall, a large sized MicroLED Wall TV that comes in 75-inches, 88-inches, 93-inches, 110-inches, 150-inches and 292-inch display configurations. It is an 8K resolution TV, powered by a Quantum processor with Tizen OS running inside. All Samsung’s 2020 8K TVs will come with extra features like the peak-millennial Multiview, that allow users to display their phone screen alongside whatever they are watching.
LG is the second most sought after brand for TVs, it introduced a new roller TV, the company’s latest 65-inch UHD is a Roll-Down OLED display that rolls down from the ceiling like a projector screen. LG also showed off a smaller 48-inch OLED TV. It also showcased some OLED display concepts, designed to cover the walls of aeroplanes, to make the cabin feel more spacious. Transparent LG displays also hit the CES conference, with a 55-inch Full HD screen that the company claims offers 40% transparency and can be used as cabin partition, as well as a 65-inch bendable OLED display and a 13.3-inch OLED plastic tablet.
Smartphones:
The segment everyone loves, new Smartphones with upgraded features, pro cameras, fast speed and ultra smooth gaming. In the CES 2020 Samsung unveiled the much awaited Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite, the slightly toned down versions of the Original Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. Both smartphones features 6.7 inches AMOLED Infinity-O display with 2400 × 1080 pixel resolution, 4,500mAh battery, Triple Rear Camera Setups and 32MP front camera. The Lite editions also bring back the headphone jacks.
TCL stunned everyone at the conference by unveiling a trio of self branded 5G smartphones. The devices sports quad rear camera setups and will be powered by midrange Snapdragon SoCs. All three phones will be available under $500 which the company thinks will be a plus point for their demand.
Cars and Automobile Parts:
Cars and Automobile parts are a necessity of transport that makes possible for us to commute around. Innovation and technological advancement in the segment is crucial for a hassle free future. The biggest surprise in the segment was presented by Sony, it unveiled Vision-S concept electric car at the CES 2020. The sedan Sony calls Vision-S has 33 sensors, large displays and 360° Audio.
Mercedes has shown off its Vision AVTR concept car. It is powered by the batteries which company claims is made using graphene-based organic cell chemistry. The axel design of the wheels allow the car to move in side way directions. We further saw electric cars from manufacturers like Fisker and Byton. While, Russian-based Yandex has demonstrated its self-driving tech with Toyota Prius sedans kitted with their system.
Bosch unveiled an AI-powered transparent LCD Virtual Visor. Fitted with an in-cabin RGB camera, the Virtual Visor tracks how the sun shines on the driver’s face, using AI, the visor locate face features like the driver’s eyes, mouth and nose to track how shadows move across the driver’s face, it darken and undarken virtual visor when needed.
The biggest announcement in the sector was done by Hyundai and Uber, who are making Uber's flying Taxi called the S-A1. It is an electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle that the company hopes to provide at scale by 2023. It has all the safety features and the craft’s rotas also spin slower than a typical helicopter’s to reduce noise pollution. Yes, It will be flown by a pilot.
Smart Wearables:
A lot of smart wearables has been displayed at the CES 2020. Jabra unveiled the Elite Active 75t wireless earbuds, which are more durable, come in six colours and boasts four-mics. Jabra says that they last up to 7.5 hours on a single charge and are waterproof up to IP57. While, in the wristwear there is Suunto 7 which is a Wear OS sports smartwatch with 12 hours of GPS training and Diesel’s unisex Fadelite that offers a smaller body and transparent straps.
Tali's smart helmet was also unveiled at the CES 2020, it is primarily designed for motorcyclists. The smart helmet is voice-activated, allowing you to make calls and ask for GPS navigation directions. There are front lights and tail-light as well as turning signals, which connects with your motorcycle to signal correct information.
French healthtech startup UrgoTech introduced a smart wearable headband for people who struggle to sleep at night. The Urgonight headband is a padded headband with small electrodes that adjust to the size of your head. It measures your EEG via an app, with a view to showing you a real-time display of your brainwaves.
Smart Home Products:
Companies like Apple, Amazon and Google are working on Smart home devices for a while. There are a few new entrants in the segment as well, such as Netatmo Smart Door Lock and Keys, which uses physical NFC keys as well as digital keys for guests. There is also another piece of bathroom tech from Kohler after its well received Alexa smart toilet last year, now it came up with Moxie showerhead which contains an Alexa-enabled Bluetooth speaker.
Canadian company Danby has revealed a smart mailbox, called the Parcel Guard which acts as a safe anti-theft box, which can be opened by couriers using a code or a smartphone app. French company Lexilife at CES this year, has also created a smart light that it claims can reduce the effects of dyslexia by emitting pulses of light that enable one eye to gain power over the other, the company says that it worked in 90% of participants with dyslexia.
A Korean company Tenminds has made a Motion Pillow that claims to stop you snoring. Featuring a pressure monitoring system with four airbags inside, the pillow is able to detect snoring and gently inflate or deflate in order to turn your head. That's not all from the CES 2020, there are hundreds of more exciting new gadgets and products introduced at the conference that will be covered soon.
