According to the latest analysis and statistics report published by Counterpoint Research, Huawei surpassed Apple to become the largest smartphone maker in 2019. Even with the sanctions put by U.S Trade and Commerce department on the company, it surpassed Apple which was previously the second largest smartphone vendor of the world. The smartphone sales as a whole declined 1% in the previous year which affected the industry.
The sales of Huawei grow in its homeground China, where it used to enjoy a 40% market share, now that has exponentially increased to 60%. It was expected that the Chinese smartphone giant will see a decline due to being unable to access Google Play Services as a result of U.S ban, but it surprised everyone by taking over Apple as the second largest smartphone manufacturer. However, Samsung retains the top position with over 296 million shipments last year.
Huawei is still struggling to find an alternative for Google Play Services, but the company still managed to break it's own record by shipping over 238 million smartphones that includes the Honor branded devices as well. Apple has now fallen to the third position with over 196 million smartphone shipments. There isn't any decline in the shipments from previous year for Apple, but Huawei performed exceptionally well in China that's why it climbed the chart leaving Apple behind.
The fourth and fifth positions are held by two more well received Chinese smartphone brands, Xiaomi and OPPO with 124.5 and 119.8 million shipments, respectively. These top five smartphone brands make up 66% market share which is a jump from 65% in 2018. Huawei also remained the top 5G smartphone seller in 2019 by shipping around 6.9 million 5G ready devices, far ahead of any other smartphone manufacturer.
