Samsung is working on a bendable smartphone that a user can wear on wrist

The first generation of foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei have now been announced. Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Fold, equipped with a flexible screen that folds inwards. While the Mate X comes with a different design that folds outwards. Samsung is expected to release several models in the coming years. Motorola is also developing a clamshell design foldable smartphone under its Razr family.

Now the rumour has it that Samsung is currently working on a smartphone you can wear on your wrist. Renders of what seems to be Samsung’s idea of a wearable smartphone has been spotted online. Instead of folding, the device can bend, wrapping itself around its user’s wrist allowing the smartphone to double as a smartwatch alternative.

A patent Samsung filed last year with the World Intellectual Property Organization was published a few days ago and depicts this same things as renders, a phone with an elongated display that can also bend in one direction. The patent was published on March 7, 2019. In the renders, we can see the display is attached to a spine like frame which is flexible and the whole device may be covered by the Infinity Flex display.

When the bendable smartphone is fully opened, we gets an elongated display at your disposal. Due to the narrow shape, the phone remains easy to operate with one hand. At the top and bottom, we can see a wide edge, in which all sensors are placed. Due to the flexible design, the device will tend to automatically roll up again. To prevent this a narrow slider has been fitted on the back to lock the device’s bendable tendency that can be operated with the index finger.

In addition, a magnet is placed at both ends of the telephone, which attract each other when the flexible telephone is rolled up. This way, the mobile device stays nicely on your wrist and cannot just lose weight. A camera is visible on the left of the sliding mechanism. The SIM card can be inserted from the top while the bottom offers a space for a connection to charge the device.

According to the patent description, the back of the Samsung bendable smartphone is provided with an elastic plate that bends flexibly. Various materials can be used for this, including stainless steel. Furthermore, the device has a lot of small links that make it possible to bend. These are designed in such a way that the outside feels smooth to improve the wearing comfort.

The idea certainly sounds very interesting, but there are no details on how far Samsung has progressed into the development of the new bendable smartphone and there are no details on when it might launch either. We will have to wait and see if this becomes reality anytime soon.
