Samsung is currently the major supplier of OLEDs around the globe. It is producing OLED panels in mass manufacturing units. Now time seems to change because a Taiwanese firm named IC manufacturers are all set to expand their market share by huge numbers in 2019.
Samsung has dominated the OLED display market till now but it will be encountering the growing competitiveness from fellow flat panel manufacturing companies this year mainly from Japan and Taiwan.
Smartphone manufacturers are expected to launch their mid range models featuring OLED displays in 2019, indicating OLED panels will no longer be exclusive for flagship devices only. Apple has announced that all new iPhones will come equipped with OLED displays.
Taiwanese LCD driver IC firms Novatek Microelectronics and Himax Technologies, along with other companies including Chipbond Technology and ChipMOS Technologies are going to start promoting their businesses in the OLED panel sector in 2019.
Novatek is expected to ship around 50 million driver ICs for OLED displays this year, in result to the rising demand coming from the Android smartphone manufacturers. While shipments are likely to go up to 80 million units in 2020.
