With the advent of the fifth generation of mobile communications technology, leading chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. said at least six smartphone makers will be launching their 5G products by the end of this year. Xiaomi Corp could be one of the first of them as it is launching the flagship Mi Mix 3 which is a 5G ready smartphone.
Xiaomi officials revealed on social media that Mix 3 will support the 5G network. A promotional poster describes Mix 3 as one of the first 5G smartphones in the world. The device will have 10GB of RAM. The phone will compete Huawei Mate 20 series.
The new Xiaomi phone is expected to use Qualcomm X50 data chip for the 5G network connection. Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon said Lenovo, OPPO, Vivo, Wingtech, ZTE and Xiaomi will announce their 5G smartphone products before the end of this year.
While more manufacturers will launch 5G phones next year including ASUS, Fujitsu, HMD Global, HTC, LG, Motorola, Oneplus, OPPO, Sharp, Sierra Wireless, and Sony. Qualcomm said it will be able to further integrate the X50 data chip function into its computing platform and provide it through the system single chip (SoC) design form.
US carrier AT&T will sell a 5G hotspot router later this month. Meanwhile, other companies have announced specific 5G goals. Another US mobile operator Verizon has launched its 5G service in several cities such as Boston.
In Hong Kong, the government said it will start assigning the 5G spectrum at high frequency bands in 2019, and will hold an auction for sub 6 GHz 5G spectrum later that year. Europe, China, Australia, Japan and South Korea will launch 5G next year.
