The 2010's has been a decade of revolution especially in the segment of communication, socializing and smartphones. The whole concept of human interaction is somewhat transitioned towards a digital platform. Everything is controlled with the gadgets in our hand called smartphone, we order food, books a car, make reservation in hotels and communicate with our colleagues and friends through the Apps we have in our phones.
In 2019 people have downloaded a record 120 billion apps in across Android and iOS platforms in total, a 5% increase from the previous year. And the number only shows new downloads, not updates or reinstalls. Spending on Apps is also growing with each passing year, in 2019 users spent a whopping $90 billion on Android and iOS Apps, which is a 15% increase from the previous year. The statistics does not include the third party Apps downloaded from other than Playstore or App Store.
Despite several allegations and privacy concerns Facebook has emerged as the winner of this decade in App rankings. Facebook and Facebook Messenger are the top downloaded Apps between 2010-2019. The Top 4 positions are held by Facebook owned Apps which includes the Facebook App, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. Most downloaded Apps list is dominated by communication Apps. The other most downloaded Apps of the decade are Snapchat, Skype, TikTok, UC Browser, YouTube, and Twitter.
The list of Apps people spent most of their time is dominated by, Music and Video Streaming Apps. Netflix App tops the list of most user time spending and is followed by Tinder, Pandora Music, Tencent Video, LINE, iQIYI, Spotify, YouTube, HBO Now, and Kwai. Tinder was the most successful dating app of the decade in terms of consumer spend which earned it second position in the overall consumer spending.
In terms of gaming, which is now an important segment of smartphone Apps, Subway Surfers topped the list by a slight edge over Candy Crush Saga. While Temple Run 2, My Talking Tom, and Clash of Clans finished in the top five list. Pokemon Go which was a popular game of this decade made it to the 8th position, while the recently became popular games such as PUBG and Call of Duty: Mobile failed to make it in the top 10 list, but they seem to be strong contenders for the next decade.
