HMD Global (parent company of Nokia) is following the footsteps of other smartphone makers as it announced that four of its smartphones will soon come with the Face Unlock feature. The company will be rolling out face unlock as an update to the Nokia 8 as well as Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus and the mid-range Nokia 6 smartphone.
The security patch is expected to be rolled out through Over-The-Air (OTA), but the company has not revealed the Estimated Time of Arrival, except for the fact that it will be released in coming months.
Nokia now seems to be catching up with the face unlock technology. Apple first revealed the feature with Face ID in iPhone X, and Android phones like Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Huawei's Honor 7A and 7C also boast face recognition features that unlocks the phone with the front-facing camera. Face Recognition on all these devices is quite reliable but is not something that can be compared to the Fingerprint Recognition hardware.
HMD Global will use the front camera, image signal processor and the CPU to enable face unlock.
The latest announcement comes a month after HMD Global promised that all Nokia phones will be upgraded to Android P with an OTA update which hasnt even released yet.
