The Kirin 980 was unveiled by Huawei earlier this year. It is the only Android Chipset made using the 7nm manufacturing process in the market right now. Despite being the most powerful processor, Kirin 980 does not feature a dedicated 5G modem for next generation wireless connectivity speeds.
According to the sources, the Chinese company is now working on its next chipset which is going to be the Kirin 990. While Kirin 990 will have similar architecture, including a number of transistors and power consumption, it will be advertised as the first processor with 5000 Balong modem that is certified for speeds 5G.
Reports suggests, the Kirin 990 is already being tested with TSMC to prepare it to be released in early 2019. Industry insiders claim that subsidiary manufacturer HiSilicon invested about 200 million yuan in research and development that totals more than $28 million.
Sources say that the Kirin 990 will consume upto 10% lesser battery and offer more than 10% improvements in performance. Production should begin in the first quarter of 2019 and thats when we expect more detailed info to emerge.
5G is the next big thing in the smartphone industry with almost all major manufacturers rushing towards it and the Kirin 990 will feature the Balong 5000 modem, which is certified for 5G speeds.
