New Xiaomi Patent Shows An Smartphone Design with Upto Seven Pop Up Cameras

Patent filings gives us an insight to what Smartphone manufacturers are working on. Xiaomi has made its name in the smartphone market by introducing devices packed with best available technology and innovative features with impressive design. A latest Patent filed by Xiaomi to the Chinese National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) shows that the company thinks there is no limit when it comes to pop up cameras.

The design sketches submitted by the company shows both the front and back-facing cameras placed on the same pop-up mechanism. There are three different varieties of the design starting with two dual-camera setups on the front and back, then going all the way to a dual camera setup on the front and a five camera setup on the back. The large number of camera sensors can be seen occupying most of the space above the screen.

There are a lot of smartphones with pop up cameras but this design is unique in a way because both the front and rear cameras are housed in the same pop-up module. There are several smartphones with a flip-up module, that allow the users to use the same cameras for regular photos as well as selfies. Xiaomi's patent is different from anything we have seen in the smartphone segment till now.

The patent design shows up to seven cameras out of which five would be used as rear cameras and two as front cameras. The patent suggests that all the cameras will be hidden when not in use, the practicality of the system is yet to be defined by the company. We should keep in mind that patents don’t always make it to the production phase but it would interesting to see how Xiaomi pull this off, if it ever becomes a reality.
