Apple is considering whether to bring back its Touch ID to the iPad and iPhone, but this time on the screen rather than a physical touch ID sensor. Apple is evaluating biometric sensor companies O film, General Interface Solutions and TPK Holding.
O film and GIS will also supply the Ultrasonic in display fingerprint scanners to South Korean tech giant Samsung for the upcoming flagship Galaxy S10 which is expected to launch in February 2019, during MWC trade show in Barcelona. It's possible, that the same sensors you'd find in Galaxy S10 could be incorporated to the future Apple products.
In display fingerprint scanner is said to be fast and accurate as any physical scanner and more secure than Face ID which Apple currently uses in their devices. Apple wants to specifically offer the new Touch ID on its iPad and iPad Mini devices. The company believes that Face ID would be too expensive to offer in those products, but still wants to maintain their designs with thinner bezels so Touch ID seems to be a relevant solution.
Well, Apple's next iPads and iPhones are still months away from launch and things can change quite a bit in the meantime.
