Oppo patents a unique pop up and sliding secondary display design for smartphone

With increasing competition amongst the smartphone manufacturers. Innovative and new design ideas are popping up from various smartphone giants. OPPO’s latest patent for secondary display design is nothing short of a unique innovation.

As foldable phones such as the Huawei Mate X and Samsung Galaxy Fold started a new era of smartphone design, offering users a larger screen when needed, these Oppo patents will also open new doors to bring a more affordable, bigger display real estate experience to the market.

In one of the renders, Instead of a popup selfie camera, the patent shows a popup display that rises from the top of the smartphone. The pop up screen could provide additional controls while watching a video or playing a game, or it can even provide a multi tasking experience.

The secondary screen appears to be slimmer and narrower than the main display. It seems like the secondary screen is about one third the height of the main display. As per the render, the front camera along with other necessary sensors are placed on top of the primary display.

The second patent shows a phone that has a second screen which slides out from the side. This secondary slide screen could be used as a keyboard or as a touch controller while playing games.

The slider second display could also be used for app multitasking without having to minimize the app on the main display. The concepts are still patents and there is currently no word on when or whether they will actually turn into real life products.
