Samsung launched its Infinity O OLED panel earlier this year, on the Galaxy S10 series, using a cut out in the display through which the front facing camera can operate. The company is now working on cameras that fully integrate into a smartphone display without requiring a hole.
Last year, notch was in trend to increase the display real estate. Now it's pinhole camera that's taking over all the new flagship smartphones. Samsung wants to change that too with a new phone that will have an invisible camera, hidden somewhere behind the screen.
The current AMOLED panels have been perforated using high tech laser cutting techniques to allow for the camera to be placed in it. But the front facing modules are constantly visible through them. Hiding that camera is technically possible but requires further development and research.
VP of Samsung’s Mobile Communication R&D Group Display said about under the display camera that:
Though it wouldn’t be possible to make (a full screen under the display front camera smartphone) in the next 1 or 2 years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way.The statement comes because reception to the Infinity O panels hasn’t been totally positive. The cut out interrupts a full screen video or game, users point out that some app interfaces aren’t designed to deal with a small portion of the touchscreen being missing. Now Samsung is working on a next generation version, that could do away with a notch or hole altogether.
