Samsung and Huawei has dominated all the headlines when it comes to foldable devices. Another tech company, Sharp is now showing a different approach with its foldable prototype that opens doors to many opportunities.
Sharp demonstrated a new 6.18 inch with 1440 x 3040 pixels resolution foldable AMOLED prototype. The company says that it can withstand over 300,000 bending cycles. The demonstration panel folds inwardly, but Sharp claims it can also bend outwardly.
The prototype of Sharp's own folding smartphone comes in the classic clamshell design. It folds vertically down to almost a square. A front camera is placed in a notch at the top of the screen while there is no outside display on the prototype.
The OLED display used in the prototype is manufactured by Sharp itself. According to Sharp, the display can be folded 300,000 times, if you’re checking the phone 100 times a day, that will give you over eight years of use while Samsung has a life of 200,000 times for its folding smartphone.
Sharp’s official information claims that the screen can bend up to a 3 mm radius, though it manages to hide the gap in within the thick case of its demo device. Sharp has not mentioned any plans on when and how it is going to put this new foldable display to use.
