Youtube seems to reorganizing its premium video content strategy. Rather than seek to drive viewers to its subscription services to watch content, YouTube says it will begin making more of its programs available for free but you will have to watch the ads throughout the videos.
YouTube Originals are one of the many features included in the company's $12 per month Premium subscription service. Users can pay $10 per month for Music, which is similar to Spotify and Apple Music. YouTube Premium, in contrast, costs $12 per month and includes access to all Music features in addition to Originals, ad free video streaming across YouTube, video downloads, and background listening.
YouTube began streaming original series and movies back in 2016 for subscribers to its then called YouTube Red service. It released some big budget shows like Origin, from the production company behind Netflixs The Crown and Step Up: High Water, based on the Step Up film franchise, right now it is preparing to release Wayne, a 10 episode comedy from the writers of Deadpool.
With the move to make the content ad supported and free, some sources claims that YouTubes budget for scripted content would be greatly reduced. Although YouTube Originals will be available for free by 2020, YouTube believes there will still be value in the YouTube Premium subscription.
