Samsung Electronics officially said on Monday that it would delay the retail launch of its Galaxy Fold smartphone for an unspecified period of time after reviewers met with problems with the display.
Around 50 units of the $1,980 foldable smartphones had been sent for review to journalists, reviewers, analysts and bloggers in the United States ahead of its planned April 26 launch.
Several reviewers reported the inside screens flickering, freezing and finally dying on the test units within the first few days. Two reviewers removed an outer plastic layer that was meant to stay on and reported to have scratches on the screen afterward.
Samsung said it will to find other ways to better protect the screens and educate the people who purchase it that the outside protective layer must stay. It is not yet clear how many of the review devices were defective.
The company said pressure from the phone’s hinge might be damaging the display. While it will thoroughly investigate the issue. Samsung also postponed media events for the device scheduled for this week in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Other test devices seemed to be still working well so far holding up to the Samsung pledge that claims that the phone can be folded and unfolded about 200,000 times in its life.
