In-display fingerprint sensors are common and even budget smartphones are now offering the feature. Technology is getting better and better day by day. We have seen large camera bumps, bezels, notches and then pinhole selfie cameras in flagships, now Xiaomi and Oppo had demonstrated their very first smartphones with working under-display selfie cameras on social media. While other information such as the launch date and in which devices the tech will be incorporated in are still not revealed.
OPPO took to its official Twitter handle in order to demonstrate the technology. A video posted shows the front camera hides away under the active pixels on the display. The video shows an almost all-screen smartphone lying on a table with no notch or cutout for the front camera. Yet, when the camera app is opened, there's a black bar at the top end of the screen, and the demonstrator's finger when placed on the upper front of the phone can clearly be seen being captured by the under display front camera.
Xiaomi tried to steal the show from OPPO by showing off its own concept of the under display camera technology just minutes after OPPO posted the video. Xiaomi attached a display prototype to the Mi 9. when taking a selfie, the area of the display above the front camera turns transparent, allowing the light to pass to the sensor. As seen from the video, the screen fills up space above the selfie camera when not in use.
