IDC has published its Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report for the third quarter (Q3) of 2018 and Xiaomi has retained the first position by a big margin. According to the companys Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, the Indian smartphone market reached an all time high of 42.6 million unit shipments in 3Q18, growing 9.1% year over year.
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi shipped 11.7 million units and became the top brand in the Indian smartphone market with 27.3 per cent share in the third quarter this year, with Samsung at second spot, the International Data Corporation (IDC) said on Thursday. IDC notes that shipments in 3Q18 were primarily driven by the e tailer channel and heavy discounts for festive sales.
A Chinese investor Wang, who focuses on cross border investment between China and India, told the Global Times that he thinks the biggest reason for Xiaomi's popularity in India is because its phones are relatively cheap.
On the other hand Vivo and Oppo shipped 4.5 million and 3.6 million units, respectively, in India in the third quarter, up by 12% and down by 2%, making them the third and fourth largest phone vendors in the country.
