Xiaomi patents an uglier reverse notch in order to increase the screen real estate

After the introduction of the iPhone X two years ago, smartphone manufacturers have been finding new ways to give users more screen real estate in part by housing front facing camera and sensors in a small notch at the top of the phone with some notches as small as the shape of a water drop. Some other innovative outcomes of the matter included hole punch displays and manual/mechanical sliders.

Now, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has recently patented a smartphone design with an inverted and reverse notch, which is literally a bump sticking out from the top of the device featuring a dual camera and receiver. The patent shows three various model designs, all of them having a same kind of notch.

The patent was applied by Xiaomi in mid 2018 and was published on the 23rd of April. It shows three different models which slightly differ from each other in terms of design. Common features of all three smartphones includes an edge to edge display, a dual selfie camera setup and an earpiece on top of the display. They also have a vertical dual camera setup on the back.

The notch on top of the display boasts a unique design choice and has never been implemented on a smartphone till now. No physical fingerprint sensor is visible in the design of the device, that suggests the company will go for an in-display scanner on the handset if it ever launches.
