Renders claiming to show a yet unannounced phone from ZTE called the Axon S have appeared online, showing a slider that moves horizontally to reveal its cameras. The Axon S would reportedly have both its two front and three rear cameras into a sideway slider comprising of the entire height of the phone.
In the last year, sliding mechanisms have emerged alongside hole punch displays as a means to maximise a phone’s screen to body ratio and avoiding a notch. However, ZTE is the first one to consider the possibility of placing cameras that can be operated by sliding sideways.
The company also said the design has many other advantages, such as leaving more space for a bigger battery. Through the renders we can see the front of the slider mechanism also seems to offer a touch sensitive area, although it isn’t clear what this could be used for.
Most of the phone's specifications aren't available right now, although the Axon S would include 48MP and 19MP rear cameras, one of which would offer 5X optical zoom. We can also expect an OLED display, an under the screen fingerprint reader and 5G in some markets.
There’s currently no official word on how much the ZTE Axon S might cost, when it will be released, or in what countries it will be available in. However, it seems to be an interesting concept and it adds options to the growing diversity of mechanical solutions to the bezel problem.
